SUMMARY

Sin has wrecked the world. More than simply what we have done wrong, sin is a brokenness that infects all aspects of life. It infiltrates our inner hearts, our relationships and the world we live in. We see from Genesis 3 that the sin of Adam and Eve results in this curse that spreads out from them to everything in creation.

Jesus comes to bring the antidote to the curse of sin. But that antidote comes through His own suffering, death, and resurrection. We are called to share in those sufferings! Romans 8:17-18 has this little word we might be tempted to breeze by, “suffering.” We are invited to follow after Jesus to participate in the renewal of all of creation. We are predestined to become more like Jesus. As we do this a glory will be revealed.

But how do we face suffering? The second half of Romans 8 is a exultation of encouragement. To remind us that we have already been given Jesus, what else do we need to fear. Even though suffering may come our way, God will not waste it. He is working to make us more like Jesus and bring about a glory we can’t comprehend.

Key Bible Passage(s)

Weekly Discipleship Practice

The Christian life doesn’t mean we don’t feel pain or suffering. It doesn’t mean we don’t cry to God in the middle of it. We get to both pray honestly to God about our suffering, but also seek help, guidance and perspective.
