God doesn’t just reveal His righteousness, He also reveals His wrath. His wrath is His commitment to respond to the wickedness and godlessness of the world. Wickedness and godlessness is nurtured in the world through 2 main ways according to Paul in these passages. First, they come through the suppression of the truth. The truth is, God is divine and has eternal power. This revelation is written all over the fabric of creation and is plain for everyone to see. We are without excuse. After suppression of truth, there is rejection of truth. There is knowledge of God, but a refusal to interact with Him as God. Instead, humanity exchanges the glory of the immortal God for a spirit and heart of idolatry. Idolatry is not just the worship of man-made things, it is the worship of things of my own choosing. It is a obviously man-centered understanding of life. Finally, God reveals His wrath in the here and now by withdrawing His restraining power that keeps us from diving head first into sin. God “gives us over” to the things that we pursue—sin and unrighteousness—and it darkens and destroys our hearts.
